Edinburgh's Historic Glasshouses to Reopen at the Botanics After Five-Year Restoration

Visitors will soon be able to step back inside one of Edinburgh's most iconic attractions as the historic Glasshouses at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh reopen to the public on Friday 2 October 2026, following an ambitious five-year restoration project.
The reopening marks a major milestone in the Edinburgh Biomes project, one of the largest conservation programmes ever undertaken by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Closed since 2021, the Grade A Listed Georgian and Victorian Palm Houses have undergone an extensive restoration designed to preserve both the remarkable buildings and the internationally important plant collections they protect.
Dating back to 1834, the Palm Houses are among the Garden's most recognisable landmarks and include Scotland's tallest traditional Palm House. Restoration work has included repairing the original ironwork, installing around 5,000 new climate-resilient glass panes, upgrading the heating system and carefully restoring the historic structures for future generations. The glasshouse restoration forms part of the wider £16.5 million Edinburgh Biomes project, reflecting the scale of the work required to bring these historic spaces back to life.

Before work could begin, horticultural staff undertook the enormous task of relocating approximately 800 rare and valuable plant specimens to temporary homes within the Garden's wider glasshouse collection. Replanting has now been underway for several months, with around 600 plants already returned to their newly restored surroundings ahead of the official reopening.
Professor Julia Knights, Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, described the reopening as a globally significant moment, highlighting not only the return of the historic Palm Houses but also the Garden's ongoing work in plant science, conservation, horticulture and education.
Entry to the Glasshouses will operate on a timed ticket system, with visitors encouraged to book in advance. Members and patrons of the Botanics will receive exclusive preview access during September before the doors officially open to the public in October.
The reopening is expected to become one of Edinburgh's most anticipated visitor attractions this autumn, offering the chance to once again explore spectacular tropical planting beneath the beautifully restored Victorian glass roofs, just a short walk from Stockbridge.
