Best Date Night Restaurants in Stockbridge
Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, planning a first date, or simply looking for an excuse to linger over good food and a bottle of wine, Stockbridge has no shortage of romantic dining spots. From candlelit tapas bars and intimate Italian restaurants to inventive small plates and cosy neighbourhood bistros, here are five of our favourite date-night dinner destinations in and around Stockbridge.
1. Skua
📍49 St Stephen Street
Steaming ahead after a successful start in Michelin-starred kitchens, young duo Tomás Gormley and Sam Yorke opened Skua in 2023 as the sister restaurant to Heron. While Heron leans towards fine dining, Skua offers a more relaxed and accessible experience without compromising on creativity or quality.
A bright red neon sign draws you in from the street, leading down into an intimate basement restaurant where candlelit tables and dark interiors create an effortlessly romantic atmosphere. It's moody, sophisticated and exactly the sort of place that feels made for date night.
The menu changes daily and is built around seasonal sharing plates that showcase local produce through global influences. Expect dishes such as bream ceviche with grape and chilli, maitake mushrooms, and their much-loved koji chicken. Finish with the sticky toffee pudding and a glass of wine from their extensive list and you'll quickly understand why people keep coming back.
Open late and welcoming both walk-ins and reservations, Skua is equally suited to a spontaneous evening drink or a long, indulgent dinner.
2. Sotto
📍28-32 Deanhaugh Street
Describing itself as an "Enoteca & Trattoria in the heart of Stockbridge", Sotto specialises in relaxed Italian dining alongside an impressive collection of more than 200 Italian wines.
I finally visited after receiving a generous gift voucher for cat-sitting, and it had been high on my list long before that. Living just around the corner, I'd watched the excitement build around the restaurant before it even opened, and thankfully it lived up to every expectation.
The menu changes with the seasons, but on our visit we enjoyed tempura prawns, Speck from the Salumi del Giorno selection and a wonderfully balanced Calabrian Margarita. For mains, the chargrilled Aberdeen Angus rib-eye was exceptional, while the pan-fried salmon with hispi cabbage was beautifully cooked. Dessert, naturally, involved tiramisu.
It's certainly not the cheapest dinner in Stockbridge, but for a special occasion or memorable date night, Sotto delivers.
3. Little Capo
📍18 Howe Street
If a restaurant is good enough for a two-year anniversary dinner, it's good enough for this list.
Tucked away on Howe Street, Little Capo describes itself as "a tiny, Italian-ish restaurant centred around a beautiful Aperitivo Bar & Dining Counter." Small in size, perhaps, but enormous in personality.
I watched the space being transformed before opening and knew it was going to be something special. Thankfully, it exceeded expectations. We started with calamari fritti, house-baked focaccia and burrata with fennel, citrus, chilli and pistachio — a combination I still think about regularly. Cocktails followed, including an espresso martini that, despite being dessert before dinner, I have absolutely no regrets about.
For mains we shared the flat iron steak with rocket and parmesan alongside a seafood cioppino packed with hake, mussels and samphire. And of course, no Italian-inspired date night would be complete without tiramisu.
Whether you're dropping in for aperitivo and cocktails or settling in for dinner, Little Capo strikes that perfect balance between relaxed and special. Just be sure to book ahead.
Still not convinced? Stanley Tucci recently paid a visit and summed it up perfectly: "They call themselves Italian-ish, I call them very, very good." Frankly, who am I to argue with Stanley Tucci?
4. Cata
📍30 North West Circus Place
Just off Stockbridge on North West Circus Place sits Cata, a Spanish tapas, wine and coffee bar that feels purpose-built for long conversations over shared plates and good wine.
There's something about the atmosphere here that immediately slows everything down. Candlelit tables, warm lighting and an intimate feel make it perfect for a romantic occasion. Even when daylight streams through the windows, it somehow retains that cosy evening energy.
The menu showcases classic Spanish flavours through tapas, pintxos and carefully selected charcuterie. Highlights include Chorizo en su Crema, Fabada de la Casa and an excellent selection of Iberico meats. The pintxos are particularly memorable, especially the Pollo al Ajillo and the Sobrasada Picante with Mahón cheese, honey and walnuts.
The wine list is extensive, the staff are passionate and knowledgeable, and the whole experience feels effortlessly authentic. It's the kind of place where one glass of wine somehow turns into three and dinner stretches long into the evening.
5. Stockbridge Eating House
📍7 St Stephen Street
Sometimes the most romantic restaurants aren't the fanciest. Sometimes they're simply places that make you feel comfortable enough to stay all evening.
Stockbridge Eating House occupies the former Bell's Diner site and comes from the team behind The Gardener's Cottage and The Lookout. The interior is simple and welcoming, with shared tables, gingham tablecloths and mismatched chairs creating a charmingly unpretentious atmosphere.
What makes this place special is its focus on excellent ingredients and straightforward cooking done exceptionally well. The menu changes regularly but centres around European bistro classics, seasonal produce and hearty sharing dishes. The Bell's Burger pays tribute to the former occupant, while dishes such as lobster with garlic butter showcase the kitchen's ability to elevate simple ingredients.
There's a genuine sense that you're dining in somebody's home rather than a restaurant. It's cosy, lively and full of character — exactly the sort of place that makes for a memorable evening together.
Whether you're after inventive small plates, Italian comfort food, Spanish tapas or a cosy neighbourhood bistro, these five restaurants prove you don't need to leave Stockbridge for a memorable date night.
