If you’ve ever stepped into Charlie Miller in Stockbridge, you’ll know it’s more than just a salon — it’s a hub of creativity, care, and community. Now there’s even more reason to celebrate. After 12 years with Charlie Miller, stylist Karyn Holloway has returned to the heart of Stockbridge, at Charlie Miller on Raeburn Place.
We caught up with Karyn to talk about her journey, her favourite transformations, and her top tips for keeping hair looking its best.
1. Career Inspiration
Q: What inspired you to become a hairdresser?
Karyn: I’ve always loved helping people feel good about themselves. Hair is such a big part of confidence, and being able to create that transformation is what drew me in from the start.
2. Early Career Journey
Q: Tell us about your career before joining Charlie Miller in 2013.
Karyn: I trained and worked on Princes Street with Ian Cameron, building up my skills and confidence. Those early years gave me a strong foundation in cutting and colour. By 2013, I was ready to grow within Charlie Miller’s creative, inspiring team. Even during 13 amazing years living in Bermuda, I followed the company’s work — it was always where I hoped to be.
3. Standout Moments
Q: What’s been a career highlight so far?
Karyn: There have been many, but completing my L’Oréal Colour Specialist Course stands out. Graduating at Central Saint Martins in London, cap and gown, with my husband proudly watching, was unforgettable.
4. Stockbridge Energy
Q: You’ve worked across different salons — what makes Stockbridge special?
Karyn: Stockbridge has such a unique energy. It feels like a little village in the heart of the city, with a strong sense of community. Being back really feels like coming home.
5. Life Behind the Chair
Q: What’s your favourite part about being a stylist?
Karyn: The connections. Of course, I love creating beautiful hair, but it’s the trust and conversations with clients that make my job so special.
6. Highlights & Colour
Q: How often should clients refresh colour?
Karyn: For a full head of highlights, every 10–12 weeks. Balayage can last longer — around 12–16 weeks — as it grows out more naturally.
7. Common Mistakes
Q: What’s the biggest mistake people make with coloured hair?
Karyn: Not using professional shampoo and conditioner. Supermarket products can strip colour and undo the salon’s work. Good homecare is just as important as the colour itself.
8. At-Home Care
Q: What products do you recommend for blondes?
Karyn: A purple or silver shampoo to neutralise brassiness, and the Charlie Miller Hydrate range to keep hair soft and shiny — lightened hair needs extra care.
9. Current Trends
Q: What colour trends are you seeing right now?
Karyn: Lived-in, low-maintenance looks — soft balayage, warmer blondes, and glossy brunettes. People want effortless colour that still makes a statement.
10. Clients & Celebrities
Q: Have you worked with celebrities?
Karyn: A few familiar faces, but honestly, I treat every client like a celebrity. Everyone deserves the same level of care and attention.
11. Outside the Salon
Q: How do you spend your time away from the chair?
Karyn: I love time with family and friends. I’m Beyoncé-daft — whenever she’s on tour, you’ll definitely find me there. I’m also happiest at concerts or walking in the hills, which is where I feel closest to my dad.
12. Returning Home
Q: And finally, how does it feel to be back in Stockbridge?
Karyn: It feels amazing. There’s such warmth in this area, and I’m excited to reconnect with clients I’ve known for years and meet lots of new ones.
